Department of Mechanics and Mathematics is one the largests department in Novosibirsk State University. Pure mathematics is mostly studied on the department and even applied mathematics is studied from theoretical side of views. Lots of graduates don't stay in research institutes nor in University. Usually, they do something that isn't directly connected to mathematics.
It seems obvious that the mathematics department would prepares you to be a specialist in mathematics, but there are other options. Many graduates work as managers or as financial experts in different companies or banks. There are a lot who work as a programmers. But it is not so surprising, in all those areas there are many difficult and unusual problems. This is because sometimes you should persevere in attempting to find a solution when you study mathematics.
It is almost impossible to understand what to study today in order to be successful tomorrow. Nevertheless, the Mathematical Department is still quite popular during more than forty years for quality education. It does not depends on whether graduates want to work in mathematics, economics, software production or even in design.
